Jobs boom as unemployment rate falls

It was good news for the North West job market as unemployment fell by 16,000, a decrease of 7.6%.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that between June and August there was a decrease in the number of people looking for work. The number of people unemployed in the region was 194,000, a rate of 5.5%.

Nationally, unemployment has dropped to a seven-year low with a record number of people in work. Those out of work dropped by 79,000 to 1.7 million (5.4%) in the three months to August ­– the lowest since 2008.

For the same period, the labour market increased by 140,000 to 31 million – the highest since records began in 1971.
